Evaluate an area of business by using Porter's Five Forces Model Essay

Evaluate an area of business by using Porter's Five Forces Model. Select an industry from the list below and describe the relative attractiveness of entering that industry - Essay Example university text books, religious literature, fictitious novels on all subjects, cooking stuff, books on international relations and current affairs etc. However, the industry has observed a sharp decline in growth after advent of electronic commerce coupled with recent economic turmoil that further hampered its growth. This will be discussed in detail in the following section when author will present real world scenario. (Foner Books Report, 2010) The author would now provide an analysis on Book Selling Industry across USA by using Porter’s Five Forces model. Each force will be discussed in detail so that a reader could have a clear insight about the scope and business potential in this industry. It should be pointed out that book buyers in USA could be divided into two major groups such as core students (the educational text books market) and book lovers (that tend to buy books on various subjects). The bargaining power of core students has increased considerably in last 2 years because of decline in demand of school, college and university education. Indeed, the reasons behind that include lack of short - term unemployment opportunities followed by surge in inflation, which compelled the students to take semester or yearly breaks. In this way, decline in demand of students sharply reduced the demand of course or text books, thereby leading to decline in book selling activities. As far as demand from book lovers are concerned, it should be emphasized that bleak employment prospects and decrease in consumer purchasing power also forced potential buyers to tighten their belts and reduce spending on books. For instance, today book lovers also demand higher value for the money they spend in the market. Hence, it is worthwhile to point out the fact that increase in bargaining power of consumers has resulted in downward pressure in pricing. Leading book retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, BN.com and Borders were forced to reduce their prices by announcing

Teaching Situation Essay Example for Free

Teaching Situation Essay A1a. Teaching Situation The teaching situation in the video was a typical computer lab type of classroom. The tables were arranged around the perimeter of the room as well as an aisle in the middle with two long tables. Computers were placed on top of the tables with a adequate spaces in between to allow each student to have enough space to work. On the wall of the classroom there was a blackboard, as well as a LCD screen that was utilized to show the students what the teacher was doing on the teachers computer. A large wood cupboard is placed alongside of the blackboard. There is a globe and an overhead projector that is near the teachers computer and workspace. Each student is seated at their own computer. A1b. Educational Activities The student s in the video were instructed to create a summary on the computer using a word processor. First, the students reviewed the material that they had read as a group. Second, the students created a graphic organizer on the computer that showed the main ideas and supporting details of the information they had read. Finally, the students produced a summary on the computer and reviewed their summaries together as a class.A1c. Instructional Delivery The instructional delivery that the teacher presented in the video was direct instruction when she was reviewing the students reading material. Later on, the teacher employs computer assisted instruction by using the LCD panel to project her word processing example to the students. The technology that was incorporated into the lesson was a desktop computer, a word processing program, as well as an LCD panel. A2a. Level of Student Engagement During the lesson, the students were actively listening to the teachers instructions as she described what they were to do. Students used the technology in the lesson; first, by using the computer and also the word processor in order to create their own graphic organizer as the teacher instructed them to do. The students were mimicking the teachers actions by watching how she was setting up the document in the word processor. A3a. Connection Between Choice of Technology and Instructional Purpose The instructional purpose of the lesson in the video was for students to read a piece of material and then write a summary about what they had read. The observed teachers choice of using a word processor as the technology in the lesson indicates that the students were expected to practice their computer skills by using a word processor to type their summaries. The students used the technology to create a graphic organizer as a document and to type their individual summaries of the reading. A4a. Connection Between Effectiveness of Lesson Delivery and Student Use of Technology The lesson was delivered by the teacher projecting her computer screen onto the LCD panel for the students to view and follow along on their own computers. The teacher explains what she is doing for each step and allows enough time for the students to complete each step with her. The effectiveness of the lesson was to have students practice their computer skills as well as their summary skills. The students actual use of the word processor as technology prepared them for future tasks that would be required of them to complete on a word processor. A4b. Explanation of Thinking Process The thinking process that I used to come to that conclusion was based on the teachers interview where she states that the students need to learn how to use computers because the technology is becoming more and more applicable in their daily lives. The teacher was able to combine the two tasks into one by fusing their computer lesson into a reading lesson as well. Personally, I find that anytime a teacher can combine two lessons into one is using time in the classroom well. A5a. Alternative or Additional Form of Technology An additional form of technology that could be used is the computer program called paint. The program is basically a blank canvas where the user can create drawings by using their mouse or by using shapes that are in the program. The students could use paint to depict a scene from the reading. A5b. Justification of Recommendations My justification for my recommendation of using paint to depict a scene from the reading is to provide another angle for students to use their reading comprehension and apply it creatively on the computer program. Most students will find using paint fun, and wont realize that its work. By using the program Paint, it also provides an avenue for visual and tactile learners to apply their knowledge. A6a. Initial Reactions My initial reactions after viewing the use of technology in the video was impressed. Because of the obvious age of the video, I was impressed to see students using computers and word processing when computers were very expensive and not as readily available as they are today. The students were, then, experiencing cutting edge technology! What really impressed me when I viewed the video was the use of the LCD panel. I did not realize that that technology was available so early on, and it is very useful when showing pupils step-by-step instructions on a computer. A6b. Explanation of Considerations What I considered as I created ideas regarding professional implications regarding the use of technology in the classroom is that I plan on incorporating it as much as possible in my own classroom. Today especially, technology is more important than ever and a student should be familiar with technology in his or her classroom, in case that experience is not available to them at home.

The Civil War And Its Ending Of Slavery :: Slavery Essays

The Civil War and Its Ending of Slavery This paper is about the civil war and about how it ended slavery with the emancipation proclomation. I will also talk abou the physical loses of the war. The South, overwhelmingly agricultural, produced cash crops such ascotton, tobacco and sugarcane for export to the North or to Europe, but it depended on the North for manufactures and for the financial and commercial services essential to trade. Slaves were the largest single investment in the South, and the fear of slave unrest ensured the loyalty of nonslaveholders to the economic and social system. To maintain peace between the Southern and Northern supporters in the Democratic and Whig parties, political leaders tried to avoid the slavery question. But with growing opposition in the North to the extension of slavery into the new territories, evasion of the issue became increasingly difficult. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 temporarily settled the issue by establishing the 36Â ° 30' parallel as the line separating free and slave territory in the Louisiana Purchase. Conflict resumed, however, when the United States boundaries were extended westward to the Pacific. The Compromise Measures of 1850 provided for the admission of California as a free state and the organization of two new territories—Utah and New Mexico—from the balance of the land acquired in the Mexican War. The principle of popular sovereignty would be applied there, permitting the territorial legislatures to decide the status of slavery when they applied for statehood. Despite the Compromise of 1850, conflict persisted. The South had become a minority section, and its leaders viewed the actions of the U.S. Congress, over which they had lost control, with growing concern. The Northeast demanded for its industrial growth a protective tariff, federal subsidies for shipping and internal improvements, and a sound banking and currency system. The Northwest looked to Congress for free homesteads and federal aid for its roads and waterways. The South, however, regarded such measures as discriminatory, favoring Northern commercial interests, and it found the rise of antislavery agitation in the North intolerable. Many free states, for example, passed personal liberty laws in an effort to frustrate enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act . The increasing frequency with which "free soilers," politicians who argued that no more slave states should be admitted to the Union, won elective office in the North also worried Southerners. The issue of slavery expansion erupted again in 1854, when Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois pushed through Congress a bill establishing two new territories -Kansas and Nebraska -and applying to both the principle of popular sovereignty. The Kansas-Nebraska Act, by voiding the Missouri Compromise, produced a wave of protest in the North,

Macbeth coursework act 3 scene 4 Essay

Macbeth is so important in this scene because it’s all about him in this scene and every thing that happens is revolving round him. Before this Banquo was killed by Macbeths hired murderers. During this scene Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the lords are in the dining hall. They are celebrating Macbeth becoming king of Scotland, Macbeth starts to make a toast to celebrate the event when one of the murderers runs in and tells him that Banquo is dead. Macbeth then says,†to our beloved friend who will be greatly missed.† After this Macbeth walks back to his seat to see Banquo sitting there in his seat reaching out to him drenched in blood. Macbeth is extremely shocked he drops his cup and gasps. Macbth starts to panic and walks back still staring at the seat where he saw Banquo’s apparition and says, â€Å"don’t shake thy gory locks at me.† In this particular age people really believed in ghosts and the supernatural. They also believed that you really would go to hell if you committed mortal sins in your life .They also believed that only god could make a man into a king and only god could take his life and if anyone were to take it into their own hands would pay dearly. ` Everything was going considerably smoothly up until this point at the banquet. Everything before this was quite relaxed until an excited mood starts to kick in during the banquet and it gets the audience excited and ready for more exciting stuff to happen. It sets an edgy unrelaxed and chaotic mood. We learn that Macbeth is now at this stage very paranoid and scared. Scared that someone will find out about what he has done and scared of the consequences. He knows deep down that he will have to keep killing to cover all this up and that is what he scared of. He said he would rather face a tiger than to keep on fighting with these ghosts and apparitions. Lady Macbeth constantly tries to reassure Macbeth that everything is all right and tries to calm down the lords who are present throughout all the commotion. She assures the worried lords that he will be fine saying â€Å"on a thought he will be alright again.† Macbeth is loosing it and is saying things to the lords â€Å"which of you have done this† in a very accusing manner. Ross then seems very concerned for Macbeth as he says â€Å"what sights my lord,† because Macbeth is the only one in the room who can see this apparition. In other words Ross is asking what are you seeing in these hallucinations. Macduff does not attend the banquo because he suspects Macbeth to be up to something mischievous and becoming king so quickly. This does not help Macbeth and Duncan’s grudge between each other as we see them fight later on in the play. After the banquet Macbeth is talking to Lady Macbeth still very shaken and anxious by what happened he says to her â€Å"it will have blood they say and blood will have blood.† He also says, â€Å"I am in blood steeped so far that should I wade no more returning were as tedious as go o ‘er.†Which basically means that that he is in this too deep now and he cant get out of the trouble he has landed himself in. Which is the constant state of paranoia guilty conciseness and regret he is in and can’t get out of. The symbolism in this scene during the banquet is the ghost of Banquo. It is a symbol of Macbeth’s guilt and the terrible thing he has done to his one time good friend Banquo. The blood also shows symbolism in a way that blood will have more blood. It might mean he may have to keep killing if he wishes to remain out of the list of suspects of murderers In other words he will kill any who oppose him or try to prove that he was the one who killed banquo and king Duncan. There is a lot of dramatic effectiveness in this scene. The moods change very suddenly during the banquet scene when Macbeth was making a speech the last thing you thought you were going to see is the bloody ghost of Banquo sitting there calling out to Macbeth. And before this it was all merriment with the lords all gathered round the table eating drinking and chatting to each other and all of a sudden this happened. There was also a lot of dramatic effectiveness in the language that was used such as â€Å"don’t shake thy gory locks at me,† â€Å"they say blood will have blood,† † what man dare, I dare approach the rugged Russian bear, the armed rhino or the hyrcan tiger, take any shape but that my firm nerves shall never tremble.† A lot of dramatic effectiveness was used to make this scene, powerful, shocking, gripping and in some parts frightening. A Shakespearean audience would be very surprised and excited watching a play of Macbeth. This is because back then the upper rich class who by the way would have been the only kind of people who would have seen this play, would not be as used to bloody and violent scenes as there are in Macbeth. So Shakespeare was in a way quite ahead of his time when it came to writing plays. On the other hand a modern audience would not in my opinion act too shocked at the frightening bits of this scene as modern society are more hardened toward violence. This scene is one of the main â€Å"thrilling† scenes in the play and I think that is important because it adds that thrilling element that I think a lot of plays and films need to not stay too boring and one noted. The Mcbeth play was written for the ruling king james who was in power at that time and for the rich audience of the shakespearian era.

What does alchemy represent in the story? Themes: What are the main themes/messages of each piece? What, in other words, do you think the authors, Ralph Ellison and Nathaniel Hawthorne, are trying to communicate about life and human nature in their respective stories? Fear: What role does fear play in both pieces? Discrimination: Both stories address physical appearance, specifically one’s  skin, and the way people may discriminate against others because of external characteristics they deem inferior. Compare and contrast how discrimination and prejudice are presented in â€Å"Battle Royal† and â€Å"The Birthmark.† Final Thoughts: Author Tim O’Brien wrote, â€Å"That’s what fiction is for. It’s for getting at the truth when the truth isn’t sufficient for the truth.† Talk about how literature might give us â€Å"truer† insights into the human experience by appealing to our senses, emotions and empathy. Describe a situation in which you or someone you know may have been discriminated against because of appearance, gender, race or another attribute. What did the experience teach you? Please submit your assignment.

Theories of domestic violence Essays

Theories of domestic violence Essays Theories of domestic violence Essay Theories of domestic violence Essay therefore he fears losing award and regard. As a consequence of him non being able to economically back up his married woman, and keep control, he may turn to violence as ways to show maleness. Social acquisition theorysuggests that people learn from detecting and patterning after others behavior. With positive support, the behaviour continues. If one observes violent behaviour, one is more likely to copy it. If there are no negative effects ( e.g. victim accepts the force, with entry ) , so the behavior will probably go on. Oftentimes, force is transmitted from coevals to coevals in a cyclical mode. Harmonizing to Faith St Catherine of the Women s Resource and Outreach Centre in Jamaica, there is a civilization of maltreatment, particularly among the interior metropolis hapless Surveies have found that about one half of opprobrious work forces grew up in places where their male parent or measure male parent was an maltreater. An environment where force is either taught, by illustration, or accepted as normal will form upon a kid s mind. For case, a immature male child may see his male parent come place from work rummy and angry, shouting at his female parent. He watche s his female parent effort to delight and pacify his male parent s bibulous behavior. The immature male child is being taught that force gets consequences. Substance maltreatment leads to out-of-control behavior. A rummy or high individual will be less likely to command his or her violent urges. However some have argued that maltreaters use drug and intoxicant as an alibi for their action. Yet, intoxicant is an of import hazard factor for spouse maltreatment. Harmonizing to University of the West Indies professor and gender expert in Trinidad, Rhoda Reddock: in Trinidad, many of the most ghastly slayings and sexual force are linked to mental disease brought approximately by drug and intoxicant dependence, severally. Since intoxicant lessenings control and raises the potency for moving on urge, it is non surprising that some feel it can be a accelerator for maltreatment. Often a individual is able to keep control of violent emotions when he is sober, but after a few drinks, he becomes opprobrious. The intoxicant has dulled his marbless and diminished his ability to command his pique. In the Caribbean or more specifically in Barbados, domestic force is going more and more evident in the society. Domestic force is rarely reported in the island, therefore why the true incidence of domestic force is unknown. Pirates, Privateers, Buccaneers, and Corsairs

Pirates, Privateers, Buccaneers, and Corsairs Pirate, privateer, corsair, buccaneer: All of these words can refer to a person who engages in high-seas thievery, but whats the difference? Heres a handy reference guide to clear things up. Pirates Pirates are men and women who attack ships or coastal towns in an attempt to rob them or capture prisoners for ransom. Essentially, they are thieves with a boat. Pirates do not discriminate when it comes to their victims. Any nationality is fair game. They do not have the (overt) support of any legitimate nation and generally are outlaws wherever they go. Because of the nature of their trade, pirates tend to use violence and intimidation more than regular thieves. Forget about the romantic pirates of the movies: pirates were (and are) ruthless men and women driven to piracy by need. Famous historical pirates include Blackbeard, Black Bart Roberts, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. Privateers Privateers were men and ships in the semi-employ of a nation which was at war. Privateers were private ships encouraged to attack enemy ships, ports and interests. They had the official sanction and protection of the sponsoring nation and had to share a portion of the plunder. One of the most famous privateers was Captain Henry Morgan, who fought for England against Spain in the 1660s and 1670s. With a privateering commission, Morgan sacked several Spanish towns, including Portobello and Panama City. He shared his plunder with England and lived out his days in honor in Port Royal. A privateer like Morgan would never have attacked ships or ports belonging to another nation besides the one on his commission and would never have attacked any English interests under any circumstances. This is primarily what differentiates privateers from pirates. Buccaneers The Buccaneers were a specific group of privateers and pirates who were active in the late 1600s. The word comes from the French boucan, which was smoked meat made by hunters on Hispaniola out of the wild pigs and cattle there. These men set up a business of selling their smoked meat to passing ships  but soon realized that there was more money to be made in piracy. They were rugged, tough men who could survive hard conditions and shoot well with their rifles, and they soon became adept at waylaying passing ships. They became greatly in demand for French and English privateer ships, then fighting the Spanish. Buccaneers generally attacked towns from the sea and rarely engaged in open-water piracy. Many of the men who fought alongside Captain Henry Morgan were buccaneers. By 1700 or so their way of life was dying out and before long they were gone as a socio-ethnic group. Corsairs Corsair is a word in English applied to foreign privateers, generally either Muslim or French. The Barbary pirates, Muslims who terrorized the Mediterranean from the 14th until the 19th centuries, were often referred to as corsairs because they did not attack Muslim ships and often sold prisoners into slavery. During the Golden Age of Piracy, French privateers were referred to as corsairs. It was a very negative term in English at the time. In 1668, Henry Morgan was deeply offended when a Spanish official called him a corsair (of course, he had just sacked the city of Portobello and was demanding a ransom for not burning it to the ground, so maybe the Spanish were offended, too).
