Privacy Rights and Social Media Essay - 1538 Words

A person’s right to privacy is being challenged with the high use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. What used to be considered part of your personal life is not so personal anymore. When one chooses to share details about ones-self to their friends via a social media, they are not always thinking about the â€Å"other† people. The other people could be ones current boss or future employer. Other people could be a school official, your baseball coach, your friends’ mother; you name it the list goes on and on. Recently, a few employers or perspective employers have requested Facebook and other social network log-in information. It is probably a violation of equal employment laws, and there are two senators investigating the practice†¦show more content†¦There are a lot of positive sides to using Facebook. For the freshman class here at The College at Brockport, almost 1000 of us were able to communicate and make some friends before moving in. I t was exciting to see who would be living next door to you for the next nine months. We were able to compare schedules and make plans to meet one another so walking into class was not so awkward. Chances are a lot of Facebook â€Å"creeping† was going on. According to an online slang dictionary the term creeping on Facebook refers to spending an extended period of time looking through the profiles, photo collections, video collections of people with whom the viewer has little or no acquaintance. If you were part of the group page you were allowing most of your new friends the chance to look at your pictures and see what type of activities you do. Unfortunately, first impressions were made based on what each of us chose to post about ourselves. First impressions can be very wrong, as I found out after meeting many of my classmates face to face. Many people are more likable than they appeared to be.
